The region is steeped in medieval history with many beautiful and well preserved medieval towns, villages and castles. Notably, Pals and Peratallada

The region’s towns, Girona and Besalú boast some of the best preserved jewish quarters in Europe and some of the finest examples of 17th C. cathedrals in Girona and Castellño d’Empúries


The region is famous for its production of fine ceramics. The town of La Bisbal d’Empordà has many factories and shops, specializing in ceramic ware.
Historically one of the main industries was and remains the production of cork for bottles and tiling. Visit the cork museum in Palafrugell.
